The summer day camp runs during the months of July
and August from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Cost is
** $450.00 for a 2-week session. There is a
** $25.00 registration fee that must accompany the
application. The registration fee is non-refundable.
Financial aid is available on a sliding fee basis
according to a family's income. Extended day is
until 5:00 p.m.
(** $10.00 extra per day) A child will attend a
2-week period according to his/her challenge.
Each session during camp offers a field trip, a
special "Theme Day" (i.e. Color War Day,
Comic Day, 50's Day) and "Open Camp Day"
which includes parents and siblings. Local
artists providing an array of entertainment make
special guest appearances throughout the summer.
The campers are grouped according to age, 10-12
campers in a group and are never assigned higher
than a 3:1 staff to camp ratio. The majority of
camp is a 2:1 ratio or a 1:1 ratio, thus providing
individualized care. The program offers a
well-planned curriculum with rotating activities.
These activities include therapeutic horseback
riding, swimming, arts and crafts, music and dance,
athletics, boating, fishing, and nature study.
Activities are designed according to each camper
"s capabilities and needs. All campers are able
to participate in activities their able-bodied
friends take for granted. In order to accomplish
this, we provide extensive training for all staff
and access each child. An initial interview is
required, and parents help by setting goals and
accomplishments they would like to see happen
while at camp. Progress notes are written weekly
and parents receive a daily report on their child's
progress.
For the year 2001, 306 campers attended.
In 2002 we reached a goal of 344 campers.
No one is turned away due to their inability to pay,
and scholarships are provided for low-income
families.
Goals of the Program
* To serve those children who are physically and
cognitively challenged and who require
individualized attention and guidance in order to
participate and enjoy recreational activities;
* To provide opportunities for social interaction
with peers;
* To provide activities which will benefit each
child physically, emotionally, and socially
* To encourage the independent pursuit of play
activities through the learning of basic skills.
The goals of the program are reached in a variety
of ways:
1. Each child must have an initial meeting with the
Program or Riding Director.
2. Children are then assessed and parents fill out a
"Needs Assessment Form"
3. Counselors and Instructors chart the progress of
the child on a monthly basis.
4. Parents then get a copy of the assessment to see
their children's progress.
